Stress can be essential for survival - or it can cause illness. The way in which biological stress reactions take place explains why negative and chronic stress is considered to be the cause of a large number of symptoms and illnesses. Following this logic, determining the ability to regulate stress and the long-term consequences of stress exposure must be an elementary component of preventive diagnostics or occupational health management measures.
Measuring the activity of the vegetative nervous system using heart rate variability (HRV) is the simplest, quickest, most effective and best validated and documented method of recognising chronic stress and also making the success of targeted measures visible. The analysis is carried out using a pulse oximetric measurement method (ear clip) or chest strap. In addition to a 5-minute HRV test, a 1-minute RSA test and tests to determine suitable breathing frequencies for stress regulation, a psychosocial analysis can be carried out using validated questionnaires.
The results of the tests provide information on how effectively the autonomic nervous system can currently regulate the consequences of biological stress reactions. The RSA test assesses the performance of the autonomic nervous system and provides information about the organism's ability to regulate stress, while the HRV test determines the functional state of the autonomic nervous system and assesses the stress load, stress hormone balance, autonomic age and regenerative capacity, among other things, on the basis of measurement parameters for autonomic balance.
