The main global risk factors for cancer deaths in women and men were smoking, followed by alcohol consumption and obesity. These are the findings of an international study published this year in the journal "The Lancet", based on the results of the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study.
Between 2010 and 2019, cancer deaths due to risk factors increased worldwide by around 20% to over 4 million cases. Cancer cases increased by more than 15 % in the same period. Metabolic risks were responsible for the largest percentage increase in cancer deaths.

The main risk factors are preventable. In addition to not smoking and minimising alcohol consumption, exercise and diet make an important contribution to cancer prevention. Metabolic syndrome can be avoided through regular exercise and training in combination with a balanced diet.
